Scarborough Town Centre

Scarborough Town Centre is a shopping centre located in Toronto’s east end around Scarborough. It is one of the largest malls in the Greater Toronto Area. The fourth largest shopping centre in Canada, Scarborough Town Centre, has over 130 stores.

Sears Town Centre has been a prime retail centre in the community for over 40 years. However, the mall’s management decided to renovate the space in response to changing consumer demands. Among the changes are new ceilings, coves, and a feature elevator. New porcelain floors and fences have also been installed.

The second construction phase added two wings, bringing the total retail space to 22,000 square metres. The modern mall also has several big box retailers, specialty stores, and department stores. There is also a movie theatre and a food court.

A major renovation was carried out in the early 2000s. This included the conversion of the Wal-Mart store into a full-service retail store. PETROFF was retained to provide excellent consultant services for this complex, phased construction program. In addition, PETROFF provided site management for Walmart conversion, ensuring customer access was maximized.

Another mall renovation was the “Lighten Up” renovation, which gave retailers new and expanded space. During this time, the biggest Zara store in the GTA opened. Also, a food court called TASTE MRKT was added. TASTE MRKT features 25 quick-service food brands.

In July 2010, Victoria’s Secret opened its first Pink store in Canada. Muji also opened in the Scarborough Town Centre. Next at Home, Brantano footwear, and Pets at Home are also in the retail park.

Other shopping center highlights include Cineplex cinemas, Chick-fil-A, and Jollibee. In addition, there are 30 dining options, including restaurants and cafes. At the top of the mall, you will find Boots, Game, HMV, Waterstones, and WHSmiths.

Besides shopping, Scarborough Town Centre is a transit hub for Scarborough, Toronto. You can take TTC bus routes to and from the centre. The TTC Line 3 Scarborough station is also directly adjacent to the centre. If you need to leave your car, the parking lot is usually busy, and people hang out there for hours.

The development of the Scarborough town centre has resulted in many proposals for the future. Several plans have been developed, such as expanding and renovating the existing mall or creating a new shopping centre. But the master plan for the Scarborough Centre is designed to keep the existing booming mall.

    The plan includes the following:

  • Consolidating loading and parking uses.
  • Optimizing building heights to encourage transit use.
  • Developing an exemplary grain street network.
  • This will support a vibrant public realm and improved pedestrian connectivity. The center will become a community/customer-focused hub as it grows and develops.

With an estimated footfall of 18 million per year, Scarborough Town Centre is a leading regional destination in east Toronto. It will grow to become a national exemplar regarding sustainability and customer/community focus.
